MAYOR TURNER PROCLAIMS JUNE “IMMIGRANT HERITAGE MONTH”

Refugees to be honored for their contributions to Houston

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner today proclaimed June as “Immigrant Heritage Month” in the City of Houston, joining major cities across the country in the celebration of the contributions of immigrant communities.

“Houston is proud to take part in this national initiative to celebrate and share the inspirational stories of American immigrants,” said Mayor Turner. “Houston is the most diverse city in America, with more than one fourth of our population being of foreign national origin. This month, we celebrate this rich diversity as part of Houston’s strength and ‘can do’ spirit.”

Several community events are scheduled as part of the celebration, including the mayor’s recognition of refugees from 13 different countries for their courage, strength and perseverance in spite of hardships.

Houston’s celebration of Immigrant Heritage Month is an initiative of the Department of Neighborhoods Office of International Communities sponsored in partnership with local organizations and corporate supporters. For a schedule of events, visit www.houstontx.gov/oic.
