Mayor Parker Signs Policy to Increase Language Access in Houston

MAP AP 2-11

Mayor Annise Parker recently signed into effect a new policy that will help to close the language access gap in the City of Houston. The policy, which is part of the City of Houston’s Office of International Communities iSpeak Houston initiative, seeks to increase access to information and facilitate communication for those limited language proficiency.

As per the Mayor’s directive, the City of Houston’s departments have created language access plans to provide essential information about activities, programs, and City services in the five foreign languages of greatest need to residents.

The Office of International Communities has created the iSpeak Houston webpage, www.houstontx.gov/ispeakhouston, that has iSpeak language cards, useful links, and instructional media available to view free of charge. For more information about iSpeak Houston, please contact Terence O’Neill, Division Manager of the Office of International Communities at 832.393.1010 or send an email to ispeakhouston@ houstontx.gov.
