On September 25, 2013, a delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce led by Mr. Wang Qiang, Deputy Division Director, Department of Market System Development of the People’s Republic of China’s Ministry of Commerce. The 16-member delegation met with Ms. Jennifer Ostlind, Division Manager of the Development Services Division of the City of Houston’s Planning and Development Department and Ms. Muxian Fang, Senior Planner of the same division. During the meeting, the delegation learned about the City of Houston’s long-term development plans, as well as the various plans underway for complete street development that will make the city more pedestrian and public transportation-friendly. The group took part in a question and answer session with representatives of the Planning Department, where they were able to learn more about Houston’s unique approach to city planning without zoning laws.
The delegation, who was in the United States as part of a training program that included various meetings with universities and educational institutions in New York, Los Angeles, and Houston. The group was brought to Houston by Consul Derong Cao, of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Houston, who also attended the meeting with the Planning Department.
