On September 23rd, Director General Zhang Weiguang of the Haidian District Bureau of Education visited the City of Houston to renew a partnership agreement between the two government entities. Mayor Parker led the courtesy visit with the Director General, who sought to expand the parameters of the original agreement, which was signed in 2007, to include administrative exchange and training programs at local universities.
Mayor Parker was joined by Mayor Pro Tem Ed Gonzalez, City of Houston Chief Development Officer Andy Icken, and Houston Independent School District Trustee Harvin C. Moore for the meeting and a discussion of how to bolster ties between Haidian District, Beijing, and Houston. The two areas have long shared ties between their school districts and this renewed agreement assures that those ties will remain strong in the years to come. Houston has hosted a number of delegations from Haidian District in recent years, and the relationship in place between Houston and Haidian led to a sister school linkage being set up between HISD’s Mandarin Language Immersion School and Beijing’s Renmin School.
